MYSTERIES OF MEDICINAL LEECH THERAPY (MLT) - TREATMENT METHOD APPLIED WITH BLOOD-SUCKING LEECHES
Medicinal leech therapy also known as hirudotherapy is a natural method of treating a variety of health ailments using leeches. By regulating the cardiovascular system, the leech effectively treats or assists in the treatment of many diseases such as cardiovascular, endocrine, digestive, genitourinary, respiratory, osteoarticular, dermatological or neurological diseases.
Leeches work similarly to antibiotics. They are able to cure our diseases, they also increase our immunity and vitality in an amazing way !!!
Medicinal leech therapy is an old, proven and harmless method of treatment with leeches currently experiencing a renaissance in the world. It has been known to mankind for a long time, however, recently hirudotherapy is returning to favor and is considered an alternative method of treating ailments and conditions.
WHY SHOULD LEECHES BE USED?
In hirudotherapy, leeches sourced exclusively from laboratory breeding and with a certificate of origin are used. The leech attaches to the patient's body by a mouth opening equipped with suction cups. The puncture of the skin is in the shape of three radially diverging lines. After the puncture, the leech draws blood. From the body of the bitten person it can suck out an amount of blood equivalent to ten times its weight. At the same time, numerous medicinal substances are released from its salivary glands into the patient's bloodstream. After the procedure, once used leeches must be disposed of in accordance with current regulations, as it is prohibited to use the same leeches on another body.
It has been successfully used for many ailments on both small and large animals. No animal anesthetics are used before the procedure. The procedure itself is performed in the same way as in humans and takes about 30 - 60 minutes.
Leeches have been used in veterinary medicine for many years. Their beneficial effects have been studied and documented in many professional medical and veterinary publications. Below we list the basic and most common uses of hirudotherapy in veterinary medicine. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by phone.

Larval Therapy:
While the very idea of treating wounds with larvaes may seem disgusting to many, it turns out that this method has been known for thousands of years. What's more, in many cases it is far more effective than standard surgical treatment. This is because it allows wounds to be precisely cleaned of dead or infected tissue.
Larval therapy otherwise known as biosurgery, is a method of therapeutic wound cleansing that involves the introduction of live, sterile larvaes into wounds. Its goal is to remove as much infected and dead tissue as possible, which significantly speeds up the wound healing process.
In larval therapy most often used are sterile green maggots (LucillaSericata), which feed exclusively on bacteria and necrotic tissue, making them ideal for this task. The larvae are reared under sterile laboratory conditions, on plant media, which makes them completely safe.
It is minimally invasive method which gives excellent results, especially considering that the therapeutic effect of the larvae takes place on three levels:
Precise debridement of the wound from necrotic tissue, both with maxilla and externally secreted proteolytic enzymes that cause liquefaction of the tissue;
Decontamination of the wound and elimination of bacteria - enzymes and active substances secreted by the feeding larvae show strong antimicrobial activity, including against strains resistant to commonly used antibiotics (methicillin-resistant bacteria or blue pus bacilli). In addition, of course, a sizable proportion of bacteria is simply eaten by the larvae;
Stimulation of the healing process - the micro massage of the wound performed by the moving maggots stimulates our body to produce exudate and form granulation. In addition, the maggots' secretions enhance epidermal growth factor and stimulate the growth of fibroblasts and other cells necessary for the healing process.
Even though it may appear as such larval therapy is not an achievement of modern day medicine – it was well known back in ancient times and widely used for centuries around the world. It was only with the discovery of antibiotics that it was abandoned in favour of surgical wound debridement with a use of a scalpel. It had been forgotten for several decades, it returned to usage in the 1990s when problems began to arise with the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. It was then that the beneficial effects of maggots were appreciated again and began to be used more and more, especially for problematic, hard-to-heal wounds. As a result, at the beginning of the 21st century the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the production of maggots and began treating them as a medical remedy available by prescription.
Larval therapy – benefits
Larval therapy brings many benefits, including:
Quick and precise purification of the wound;
Elimination of infection and inflammation;
Acceleration of healing processes;
Reducing pain;
Elimination of unpleasant odor present in dead tissue and wound healing;
Avoiding the need for amputation on more than one occasion;
Elimination of treatment-resistant bacteria.
